Paris Hilton was on Larry King Live last week. Her release from prison is all the rage, and as far as I can tell, Paris Hilton has never done anything worth noting: she can’t act, she can’t sing, instead she goes to big parties in little outfits and gets her picture taken. And that picture – is worth a lot of money.

Toby Bloomberg had a post saying that The Learning Annex has offered Paris Hilton a cool million bucks to teach a one hour “How to Build Your Brand’ seminar. The New York Post has called her a brilliant entrepreneur. Huh?
They’re right. But her brand is what little girls want to grow up to be. And it’s not a good message [porn tapes, DUI’s) that we’re sending. Although she had some sort of spiritual transformation in prison and avowed that she read the Bible every day, when Larry King asked her to quote her favorite passage, she paused, only to reply ‘I don’t have a favorite.’
One thing is for certain, that girl is bold. And look what being bold has gotten her. I’ll tie that into Copybloggers guest post earlier this week “Go Big or Go Home: Why Being Bold is Critical to Getting Noticed. He says being bold doesn’t just mean writing hyperbolic blog headlines but writing about a bigger and bolder idea and backing it up with great content to match. He says if you’re bold and you’re daring, you’ll be noticed.
Being bold is better than being humble and understated because:
- You stand out.
- You’re more clickable.
- People talk about you.
- People link to you.
- Digg traffic.
- You become an expert
- Cumulative effect
The Cumulative effect means being noticed, being clicked on, being talked about, being linked to, being Dugg, and being considered an expert creates more links, and more traffic, more search engine traffic and more ad revenues.
Paris Hilton must’ve gotten the same advice. And given her popularity the past two weeks, it’s worked.

Yeah, it has worked where others have failed a la Britney and Lindsay. At the same time, was it worth it? Clearly controversy works to garner readers, viewers and fans. But then again consider Ann Coulter, Rush and those folks. The same strategy fuels their success, but does anyone really respect these people? Given what all these brands stand for, I’m not sure it’s worth it.
I have to agree. The brands you mentioned, all across the board, don’t necessarily stand for much. But fans still want to watch them succeed or watch them fail. They’re still in their corner. With Britney or Lindsay, it’s a disaster. It will be interesting to see Britney try to make a comeback, how it will be received. Ah, the life of celebrities, ay?
Michele,
This is a great write up because, until this chapter in Hilton’s life, Paris has always maintained a consistent brand, which was to be bold. In fact, her early arrival to serve the sentence reinforced it it. She got off track in the middle. And now, well, it’s anyone’s guess whether she will return to being bold or try, um, reformed? on for size. One thing is certain. I don’t think she’ll ever be able to truly have the brand she once had. Good, bad, or indifferent.
All my best,
Rich
she’s brillaint truly brilliant. People think’s she’s stupid but actually she’s really inteligent as people can’nt get enough of her!
