Dear "visitor": Thanks for taking the incredible amount of time to go through my archive on Twitter to reference that.

Certainly, I understand not wanting to read a long post, as always, we realize that your time is valuable. As a result of that tweet and the feedback I got, usually my posts are 5-10 paragraphs. I rarely post this long, except when it's a major thought leadership piece. Readers can expect shorter posts from me... with the exception of pieces like this, which roll around every two months or so.

BTW: This post and the Welcome to the Fifth Estate, which was the last long post I wrote like this, rank as the 14th and the top read posts since the beginning of the year. I'll take that as a general reader affirmative for long posts when we have something to say.

As a vendor in this space, I have to admit that the market is still in the very very early adopter stage. While we see penetration in certain departments, there are only a small handful of organizations that see their foray into social media as a revolutionary turn to an existing marcom plan. My personal hope is that as social media tools become prevalent, the C-suite starts thinking about the ramifications of sticking with a top-down communications strategy.

"...the communicator truly becomes an ombudsman between stakeholder and management..."

Agree completely AND this has been the number one challenge, at least the one that I have seen. Companies, in all forms, are rushing to get involved, yet when they are told that it is not simply a new form of push marketing they struggle. Now you throw in that personality is critical and a shudder seems to run down the spine. Certainly there is a good group of folks within corporations who do understand this (hell, I'm trying to become one), but it has been the part where things become stuck.

Providing creative ways to 'unstick' ourselves from this point has been the fun challenge ;)
